Hey Eden.. this blog is for you :)
So I've been listening to a lot of lyrics pretty closely recently and I found some songs that pretty much rock :) Maybe we can take some ideas from these greats.. they also reminded me of things we have late night convos about.. you gotta love it when you realize that other people sometimes feel the same way you do :D
Check em out..
You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift (this one especially made me think of you)
Pitter Pat by Erin Mccarley
Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap (one of the coolest songs I've ever heard.. I don't know what you'll think about it though)
Love, Save the Empty by Erin Mccarley (she's one of my newest favorites)
Rain on your Parade by Duffy (kind of a Nate song.. and also from Bride Wars which makes it even better)
So that's it for now.. they're all girls.. whatever that means :D

Let me know what ya think!!

p.s. in case anyone actually reads this blog I definitely think you should check those songs out and let me know what ya think! :)

The words that crept from my mind through the voices in my head...
I've been thinking a lot about patterns lately. Patterns in my life, and in my experiences with love.
In my limited experience with dating and love (which can definitely be two different things), I have come to a couple conclusions:
1) it's sometimes hard for you to give your heart away
2) but it's also really hard when you are willing, and the other person won't take it. Or they won't take it all.
This is what keeps running through my head:
I gave him all that he was willing to take
But he rejected my soul
He didn't want it all
He didn't want me at all

Belief
I love how lyrics can somehow always say things that regular everyday conversation can't.. and when you hear that perfect rhyme, or the words are strung together just right.. it alters your whole perspective. I love it. That's kind of how I felt when I heard the song "Belief" by Gavin DeGraw.
It's actually the chorus, but I think it's impeccably written:
Tonight, you arrested my mind.
When you came to my defense.
With a knife in the shape of your mouth,
in the form of your body, with the wrath of a God
Oh, you stood by me, Belief.
On the same note, it's the greatest feeling in the whole world, when you finally write that verse, chorus, or even line that sums up that feeling you've been trying to express. That recently happened for me..
Here's a part of a verse that I wrote that just came together like it was always meant to mean exactly how I felt:
Head bowed
Tears falling like raindrops to the ground
You scream -- there's no sound
The taste of him lingers on your tongue.
Each thought like breathing without lungs.
I'm still working on it, but it's been quite a while.. a little over a year actually, since words have come together like this for me.. I was pretty excited to see something finally come out slightly coherant :)

A record? Like, a record, record, record?
Someday I want to have an old-fashioned turntable with a healthy collection of records.
Yes, they are older, and they could break. But they are just so rock-n-roll.
Also, I would love to have one of these clocks on my wall. Someday.

The Rest Is Silence
Unlike Laura, I have a difficult time putting my feelings into words.. Somewhere in the process of translating my feelings into sentences everything gets scrambled and it ends up not making any sense. This is where music saves me.
"If a composer could say what he had to say in words, he would not bother trying to say it in music" - Gustav Mahler
Music is a part of all of us. I believe it's an inherent quality that every single person needs to survive. Can you imagine life without music? Without humming a simple tune? Without wind chimes, and drums, or rain? Without the sound of high heels on hard wood, or simple instruments? What would a movie be like if it didn't have the music to set the mood? What would lyrics be without the melody? I can't, nor would I ever want to reside in a place void of music.
"Without music life would be a mistake" -Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
This is why we sing and write. Not to be recognized, not because it seems to be the popular thing to do.. but because we have to. Someday we hope to influence people with our music, help others the way we've been helped. Music gets me through the day, and someday I want my music to help another get through their day.. because I know how much it helps.
"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life" -Berthold Auerbach

Soundtrack of Your Life
"Music is all around us...all you have to do is listen."
-August Rush
-August Rush
I believe that life has a soundtrack; but that it does not just consist of perfectly written lyrics combined with crisp melodies.
It's messy. Just like life.
It's the sounds all around us, every day. It's the honk of a car horn, or the cry of a baby. It's the song of a bird, or the scrape of snow shovel against pavement.
There are harsh discords and cacophonies. Sometimes your voice cracks, and sometimes you go flat. We endure the thousand terrible songs we write before that song finally comes out.
But then there are beautiful, clear moments of unison or lovely harmonies.
That is what we live for. For the moments where it all comes together.
Well, that is one way of looking at it.
But I think that sometimes...if you look deep enough, you can see the beauty behind the chaos.
And that can be more powerful than any hit song.

Heartache often makes for some excellent lyrics...
Britt and I have been through a lot together.
We make it through okay with: each other, some great music (our own and our influences), and a healthy dose of chocolate.
Some of the best inspiration comes from the worst days.
The one bright spot that comes from heartache, is the incentive to write that inevitably follows. Sometimes it is soon after; other times it takes a while. Eventually, the song will come out. It is a form of closure; it's a relief when we can finally sing about it and detach ourselves from the situation.
So here's to music. To the way that it allows us to cope with the crap just a little bit better.
It is our incentive to create.
